Feedlots are professional purpose-built facilities that use complex systems, to feed cattle. They are backed by science, and cater for all the cattle dietary, health, welfare and social needs. Feedlots are also a sustainable option for producing beef for consumers and for maintaining a sustainable environment.
Australian grain fed beef is tender, juicy, tastes delicious and meets a consistent high quality. It can also be supplied all year round, despite Australia’s varying conditions.
There are nearly 400 accredited feedlots in Australia supplying certified grain fed beef. At any given time, close to 4% of Australia’s cattle population are in feedlots.
Launched in 2021, Feedlot TECH is an initiative of Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA), in collaboration with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). It is part of the Australian Feedlot Sector Career Development and Training Strategy (2016). The feedlot-specific training platform offers a central collection of training, education and career pathway information within the Australian lot feeding sector. Feedlot TECH is a tool to provide for the Australian feedlot sector, its businesses and current and future staff.

The feedlot industry attracts passionate people who care for cattle and work to maintain a sustainable environment. Feedlot staff are hardworking, enthusiastic, open-minded and willing to learn. Our people take pride in their work and use teamwork to produce a high-quality product – grain fed beef.
Feedlots place a strong focus on providing best practice training and education for workers. This helps staff progress their career and feedlots improve their efficiency.
The sector is diverse, with many different roles available to suit an array of skills, qualifications and experience.
NFAS ensures the lot feeding sector shows a responsive feedlot management program for continual improvement. It also guarantees the safety and integrity of grain fed beef, chiefly as it relates to cattle welfare and the environment. Under NFAS, feedlots are independently audited each year by AUS-MEAT.
Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA)
The Australian Lot Feeders’ Association is the peak national body representing the Australian cattle feedlot industry. ALFA seeks to lead the industry in a manner that fosters excellence and integrity, improves the feedlot business environment, and ensures its community standing. ALFA proudly represents over 70% of Australian cattle feedlots, in terms of number of cattle on feed. ALFA provides memberships, industry events, training, scholarship and awards opportunities.
Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA)
MLA invests in research, development and marketing activities to foster the long-term prosperity of the Australian red meat and livestock industry. It is a public company and service provider to the red meat industry, not an industry representative or lobby group. MLA also accelerates innovation and delivers the industry’s integrity and on-farm quality assurance programs. MLA’s core values are customer centricity, accountability through transparency and delivering outcomes that make a difference.
AUS-MEAT
AUS-MEAT is the leading agribusiness auditing and certification body for the Australian red meat industry. It is responsible for auditing and ensuring the standards and quality assurance of the NFAS Program. This non-for-profit organisation plays a key role in protecting the reputation and integrity of Australia’s food industry. This is done through the adoption and setting of standards incorporating the provision of certification services.
